1. George was raised from age 2 by a maiden aunt, Hannah Hoyt, inLowell, MA. At age 5, he began winding bobbins at the mills inLowell. He was educated in night school.
The following notice was published in the New Chester (now Hill), NHnewspaper in 1836:
Notice
Is hereby given that I have given his time to my
son George Washington Lovrien and have authorized
him to trade and transact business for himself,
and to take all the benefit of his labor and
earning; and I will pay no debts hereafter of his
contracting.

He married Sophia Bixby in 1842 at age 20. George became an expert inthe mill and at age 24 was sent with his brother-in-law Joseph A.Patten to construct and operate a mill in Brazil. Patten was marriedto Sophia's sister, Marie Antoinette, and is the grandfather inGeneral George Patton of World War II fame. George and Joseph hadgone to Vermont to farm shortly before going to Brazil.
After a year in Brazil, George became lonely and returned to Vermontin time for Christmas. A letter from him to Sophia dated Bahia, July1, 1846 is still preserved.
A robust man of 32, he met his untimely death when he suffered a heartattack lifting a sled of wood drawn by oxen that had tipped over inthe snow. His widow was left with five children, aged four months tonine years. Hannah Hoyt took care of the baby, James, while hismother worked. Sophia allowed Joseph Patten and his wife to adoptMarcella ('Cella) in order that she would have an education.
Sophia married secondly John Willey in 1858, and in 1870 they moved toIowa, settling on a farm in Rutland where she died in 1877. She isburied in Union Cemetery in Humboldt.
